Pirates upset Colorado College to advance to championship match

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - With a 3-0 win over #11 Colorado College in the semifinals of the SCAC Championship, the Southwestern volleyball team is just one game away of capturing an SCAC title.

SU's defense was outstanding from the outset while the Pirate's offense got stronger as the match went on.

In the opening set, Southwestern fell behind early but pulled ahead with eight consecutive points to lead 14-8. The Tigers fought back but were unable to make up enough ground to apply much pressure to the Pirates as SU won 25-20.

Riding high from the opening set, Southwestern continued to ride their momentum and went up 10-5 in set two. Thankfully, Southwestern had a substantial lead towards the end of the set as Colorado College rallied to pull within one, 20-19. Back to back kills from Olivia Drummond gave SU the push they needed to close out the match 25-21.

Abbie Robb was unstoppable at the beginning of the third set as she posted five kills in Southwestern's first seven points, helping to give SU a 7-3 lead to open the third. Colorado chipped away at the Pirates' lead and pulled even 13-13, forcing SU to step their game up a notch.

And, that is just what they did as Southwestern pushed ahead by three, 19-16, and closed out the set 25-23 to win 3-0.

Southwestern hit .190 as a team and was led by Macey Pool's 10 kills while Robb added nine and Drummond continued her strong attack with eight kills and .538 attack percentage. Chandler Lentz recorded 21 digs as SU held a tough Colorado attacking front to just .085 for the match.

The win improves Southwestern to 26-10 on the year and they advance to the SCAC Championship match. The Pirates will face Trinity for the third time this season on Saturday at 7 p.m. in San Antonio.
