Pirates split day one of final SCAC Cross

SHERMAN, Texas - The Pirate women posted big rallies in both matches but ended up with a split, falling 3-0 to #8 Colorado College and then beating the University of Dallas 3-0 on Saturday.

Colorado College opened the match with a huge run, jumping out to a 7-0 lead over the Pirates. Southwestern refused to back down from the challenge, however, and quickly pulled within one point 13-12.

The Pirates took their first lead of the game on Macey Pool's ace and it was a back and forth match the rest of the way with Colorado College sneaking out the 25-23 win.

The second set started tight as neither team was able to pull away early. Southwestern built a five point lead to go up 15-10, but CC came tearing back to even the score once again, 19-19. Colorado controlled things the rest of the way to win set two, 25-22.

The Pirates found themselves playing catch-up early again in the third set and trailed by six points, 12-6. Colorado ran the show for the rest of their match and ultimately fell 25-12.

Olivia Drummond led with nine kills while Pool added in eight as Southwestern posted a .044 attack percentage. Chandler Lentz had 17 digs in the loss while Nikki Welch posted 27 assists. Colorado College was led by Abbegail Holtze who had 11 kills.

After a tough loss, Southwestern struggled to get things going again against the University of Dallas and trailed much of the opening set before pulling ahead late. The Pirates captured the lead late and took the first set 29-27.

The dominant Southwestern began to show and pulled ahead early while fending off the pressure of the Crusaders to win the final two sets 25-22, 25-22.

Drummond once again led Southwestern in hitting with 12 kills and a .323 attack percentage. Lentz was outstanding defensively with 26 digs.

The split breaks the 20 win mark for the season for the Pirates and puts them at 8-4 in the SCAC. They close out the regular season conference action on Sunday, facing Centenary at 10 am and Austin College at 4 pm.
