FOUR PIRATES EARN ALL-AMERICAN HONORS FOR 2009 SEASON

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Four Southwestern Pirates have earned All-American honors for their spectacular 2009 season, led by senior outside hitter Audra Gentry’s Second-Team All-American honors. Also named in the report were Sam Lingamfelter (Third Team All-American) and teammates Christina Nicholls and Lindsay Thompson who were Honorable Mention selections.

Gentry’s Second-Team All-American selection comes after she led the 12th-ranked Pirates to the South Regional championship match for the second consecutive season. She is the 2008 and 2009 SCAC Player of the Year by leading the conference with 3.83 kills per set while posting a hitting percentage of .246 on the season. She was also a Third-Team All-American selection a year ago.

Lingamfelter, a senior libero, was named Third-Team All-American while leading the SCAC with 5.52 digs per set and being named the league's Backrow Player of the Year for an unprecedented third consecutive year. She also was named the 2009 SCAC Tournament Most Valuable Player.

Sophomores Nicholls and Thompson, also All-South Region selections along with teammates Gentry and Lingamfelter, were named to the Honorable Mention All-American roster for the first time. Nicholls tallied 1323 assists as the Pirates' setter this season while Thompson was second on the team in kills, averaging 3.11 kills per set and had an impressive .348 hitting percentage.

Other SCAC players named in the report were Colorado College junior middle blocker Emily Perkins who was a First Team All-American selection, Aly Hazelwood from Trinity who was a Third Team All-American and Honorable Mention selections Meredith Ballard and Amy Schornack of Colorado College.

The Pirates ended their historic season after a 33 match winning streak that was snapped in the NCAA South Regional Final. SU went a perfect 15-0 in conference action and emerged as SCAC Champions at the Conference Tournament in early November.
