Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Competes Against Trinity in Dual Meet

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - The Southwestern Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving team traveled to the Hixon Natatorium in San Antonio, Texas to take on the Trinity (TX) Tigers in a dual meet event. This would be the Pirate's second-to-last meet of the winter before heading to the conference championships on February 8th.  

The team of Owen RodrigueSam AndersonKevan Kennedy, and senior Henry McClure finished in the second spot of the 200-yard medley relay putting in a collective time of 1:37.20, securing second place by .42 seconds. Rodrigue later competed individually in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing with a time of 55.09 and earning second place in the event. 

Henry McClure later on took a victory for the Pirates in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.72. McClure edged out his second-place competitor by almost half a second. In the 200-yard IM, two Pirates secured first and second place. Freshman swimmers Andrew Renninger and Jorge Mendiola showed well for Southwestern, clocking in times of 2:00.24 and 2:00.66, respectively. Renninger would also earn second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:56.77, 1.27 seconds back from the first-place competitor. 

In the 500-yard distance event, the Pirate freshman continued to put themselves at the top of the leaderboard. Freshman Zach Roberts finished the 500 freestyle at 4:59.37 for second place, followed by fellow teammate Sebastian Ortiz who had a time of 5:06.20.

To finish out the meet, the team of Anderson, McClure, Marc Galindo, and Carter Duncan secured another team second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay, finishing just over three seconds behind the first-place Tigers. The Pirates ended with a time of 1:29.24.

In total, the men's meet would end with a final score of 172 to 83 in favor of the Tigers. 

On the women's side, first-year swimmer Elise Samples took second place in the women's 200-yard backstroke, competing hard for first place with a time of 1:00.65. Samples time would only be .22 seconds off of the first-place finisher. Samples earned a second, second-place finish in the 200-yard IM. Her time of 2:14.53 was six seconds faster than the third-place finisher. 

In the 50-yard freestyle, junior Emma Williams and senior Emma Frey earned second place and third place with times of 25.56 and 25.87, respectively. Later on, Williams would put on a great performance by winning the 100-yard freestyle for the Pirates, clocking in a time of 54.95 and beating her competitor by just .06 seconds. Junior Molly Spano would later take a victory of her own in the 500-yard freestyle, taking the win by three seconds, finishing with a time of 5:30.06

The team of Riley Barlage, Frey, Williams and Samples fought hard for a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay, clocking in 1:42.51, beating the third-place Trinity group by .28 seconds. 

The final for the women ended with a Trinity victory by a margin of 174-79.

The Southwestern Swimming and Diving program will host their final meet against the University of Texas - Permian Basin before the SCAC Championships in February. The meet will take place at Walzel Natatorium on the campus of Southwestern University Saturday, January 21st, at 11:00 AM.
