Records fall for Pirates on final day of ULAR Christmas Invite

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Five school records fell on the men's side Saturday to close out the ULAR Christmas Invitational and Kyler Wood earned a second NCAA mark on the event's final day of action.

The Southwestern University women had five individual season best times along with a season best in the 400-yard medley relay while the Pirate men saw five school records falls on Saturday.

After earning a NCAA "B" cut time in the 100-yard breaststroke Friday, Kyler Wood also earned a NCAA mark with a third place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke on Saturday. The junior finished with a time of 2:06.12 which also broke his own school record set last season.

Working in timed finals Saturday the Southwestern men grabbed three top five finishes and four top 10 finishes to close out one of the nation's toughest invitation's.

Shelby Hall captured a school record in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:54.97 to best the record by two seconds set during the 2008-09 season by Evan Firth. After finishing third in the 200-yard butterfly, Hall grabbed his second school record on the afternoon in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:45.23 – the time bested Dylan Johnson's mark from the 2012-13 season.

The Pirate men also earned school records in the 400-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay. The group of Ty Lapinski, Simmon Belaineh, Wood and Hall bested the record in the 400-yard medley by half a second while 400-yard freestyle team finished a second better at 3:09.39.

The fast times also continued on the women's side as highlighted by a pair of top five finishes in the 400-yard freestyle relay and 200-yard breaststroke. Emily Haskell earned a season best time in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:31.47 to finish fourth.

Haskell teamed with Madison Doty, Blythe Nava, and Makaylee Frederick as the quartet finished fifth with a time of 3:46.78.

In all six season best times fell on Saturday for the women as Alex Morris grabbed a ninth place finish in the 200-yard individual medley and Kenly Gaynor finished eighth in the 100-yard backstroke to finish eighth. Morris and Gaynor both earned top 10 finishes for the Southwestern women with their season best times.

Marisa McCormack finished 10th in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:07.56 which was also a season best for the first-year swimmer.

Both Pirate squads are off until after the New Year when they return to the pool in San Antonio with a dual at Incarnate Word, January 11.
