Anderson Leads Pirates with Three Wins in Dual with Colorado College

GEORGETOWN, Tex. – Six first place finishes including three from Sam Anderson highlighted a strong performance by the Southwestern University men's swimming and diving team against Colorado College at the Walzel Natatorium.

Anderson, a senior who specializes in both the breaststroke and freestyle, helped the Pirates take the win in the 400-yard medley relay for their first event win of the competition.

Owen Rodrigue swam the leadoff leg while Anderson, Kevan Kennedy and Henry McClure finished the race in a time of 3:37.39, which was just finger length ahead of Colorado College's A-relay swimmers with a time of 3:37.42.

Anderson would later lead a contingent of three Southwestern swimmers to a first, second and fourth place finishes in the 200-yard individual medley race. Anderon's time of 1:57.93 was ahead of teammate Andrew Renninger's second place time of 2:01.87 while Jorge Mendiola touched the wall at 2:03.09.

Zachary Kangieser swam a beautiful 200-yard butterfly race to earn top honors in the event with a first-place finish time of 2:01.36, which was nearly three seconds ahead of second place.

The 200-yard backstroke saw Renninger lead from start to finish taking the top spot in a time of 1:57.79.

One of the longer distances of the day was the 500-yard freestyle event saw a battle from start to finish with Southwestern's Zach Roberts narrowly edging out Colorado College's Edmund Davis for first place with a 4:53.47 compared to a 4:53.73.

The 200-yard breaststroke was the final event won by the Pirates and it was Anderson's third victory of the day after he bested his teammate Mendiola for the top spot. Anderson touched the wall at 2:13.08 while Mendiola touched at 2:13.32.

Colorado College won the team competition by a 135-107 score, but the improvement from the first to second meets by the Pirates was noticeable in the times and will only get better as the season progresses.

Southwestern will have next weekend off before playing host to Austin College on Saturday, Nov. 5. The dual with the Roos is slated to begin at 11 a.m. CDT.
