Men's Swimming and Diving Earns Four Top-Three Finishes, NCAA B-Cut On Day 2 of SCAC Championships

Men's Swimming and Diving Earns Four Top-Three Finishes, NCAA B-Cut On Day 2 of SCAC Championships

GARLAND, Texas — On the second day of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Swimming and Diving Championships, Southwestern finished with four top-three finishes and an NCAA B-Cut.

In the most exciting race of the day, Trinity's Michael Kohl edged out Southwestern's Henry McClure by no more than a fingertip's length. Kohl clocked in at 20.36, while McClure was just a fraction of a second behind that at 20.37 to finish in second place.

McClure's time was enough to set a new school record in the 50-yard freestyle, beating Keith Gill's time of 20.64 set in the 2020 SCAC Championships. McClure also earned an NCAA B-Cut, putting him into consideration for the NCAA Tournament.

It was the third of three second-place finishes for Southwestern on Day 2 in a meet where conference records are falling by the wayside.

Southwestern's quartet of Sam Anderson, McClure, Carter Duncan, and Sebastian Ortiz opened the day with a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay, finishing in 1:23.22. The time set a new Southwestern record, unseating the previous record of 1:23.45 set in the 2016 SCAC Championships. Trinity won the event with a time of 1:21.44.

Freshman Zachary Kangieser set a new Southwestern record in the 500-yard freestyle, scoring a 4:37.55 to best Peter Robinson's mark of 4:39.11 set in the 2019 SCAC Championships. Trinity's Cade Thumann won the event with the fourth-fastest time in the history of the SCAC Championships at 4:35.15.

Anderson notched a third-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley and has now earned a top-three finish in the event in all three years he's competed.

After two days and 12 events, Trinity remains in the lead with a score of 352. Colorado College is in second with a score of 295, and Southwestern followed at 230. Tomorrow, teams will compete in the 400-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke, 400-yard medley relay, women's three-meter diving, and men's one-meter diving.
