SHERMAN, Texas - In their first meet following the long winter break, the Pirates have picked up where they left off with a strong first showing in the new year. 

The women scored 311 points while the men scored 435. 

Two first place finishes and a season best time highlighted the women's events at the meet. Emily Haskel snagged first in the 100 breast with a time of 1:11.54 while Mara Weidmann won the 200 breast with a time of 2:41.64.

The women's 200 medley relay of Sarah McCausland, Haskell, Blythe Nava and Sarah Alpini set a season best time of 1:57.94 and took third place to kick off the meet.

Other notable finishes were Melissa Nelson's third place finish in the 200 individual medley, ending in a time of 5:07.14 while Nava and Haskell had a rare tie for fourth place in the 50, each finishing in 26.40. Alpini also finished in third in the 200 fly with a time of 2:25.02. 

On the men's side, Tommy Frashier posted the only win of the afternoon for the Pirate men. His time of 4:52.38 in the 500 free earned SU 20 points.

While Southwestern may not have captured first beyond the 500 free, they had four second place finishes in the pool. The 200 medley relay of Frashier, Kyler Wood, Ty Lapinski and Dylan Johnson started things off with a second place finish in a time of 1:40.63, just over one second behind the event winner UTPB. 

Wood and Lapiniski also took second place in individual events. Wood in the 50 free with a time of 22.57 and Lapinski in the 400 individual medley in 4:25.42. Johnson finished in 1:51.41 in the 200 free to take third place in the event, while Garrett Holody finished in fifth and Lapinski sixth in 1:53.43 and 1:54.90, respectively. Stephen Montes took third in the 1650 free with a time of 18:43.34. 

To close out the meet, the Southwestern men's 200 free relay of Wood, Johnson, Ivan Cruickshank and Holody posted a time of 1:29.94 to finish in second.
