Golden, CO - The Southwestern Pirates men's swimming team posted four first place and six second place finishes at their dual meet against the Colorado School of Mines on Tuesday evening. Despite a strong showing in the water SU was defeated in points, falling 143-83.
The best event showing for SU was in the 100 yard butterfly where the Pirates snatched up the top three spots out of seven swimmers. Mid-year transfer Seth Williams took first place with a time of 55.89. Patrick Flanigan came in second at 1:00.34 and Adrian Gomez took third in a time of 1:07.50.
Southwestern started the meet strong by coming in third place in the 400 yard medley relay. The team of Flanigan, John Prater, Williams and Taylor Steele posted a time of 3:55.85 and out-touched CSM at the wall.
Stephen Montes kept the strong performances going, taking second place in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 10:54.69. Prater swam better than his seed time in the 200 free and came in at 1:55.43 for second place while Ivan Cruickshank snatched up third in a time of 2:02.67.
Steele and Montes each recorded a first place finish late in the meet. Steele in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:42.26 and Montes in the 500 free with a time of 5:24.12.
Southwestern closed out the meet on a high note, winning first and second place in the 400 free relay. Flanigan, Williams, Prater and Josh Stanfield finished in first with a time of 3:26.47 while Steele, Montes, Gomez and Cruickshank came in second at 3:45.58.
The Pirates return home to face conference rival Trinity on January 15th. The meet is schedule to begin at 2:00 pm.
