SHERMAN, Texas – Thanks to a strenuous training schedule
over the winter break the Southwestern men’s swim team
finished in fourth place at the Austin College Invite on Saturday.
Two swimmers posted season best times in four events during the
meet.
Stephen Montes had one of the strongest showings of the day for the
men taking second place in the 1650 free with a time of 18:18.14
and fourth place in the 500 free, coming in at 5:13.27.
Montes joined up with teammates Patrick Flanigan, Josh Stanfield,
and Taylor Steele to take fourth place in the final event of the
day, the 200 free relay. The relay team ended in a time of
1:36.87.
Flanigan, who was competing in his first collegiate meet ever, took
fifth place in the 50 freestyle, finishing in a time of 23.83,
under one second off the first place time. He also finished in
seventh place in the 100 free in a time of 52.73 behind three UTPB
swimmers.
Steele posted season best times in the same two events, swimming in
a time of 24.77 in the 50 free and 54.42 in the 100 free.
Jon LaRochelle took third in the 200 breast, finishing just over
one second behind UTPB’s Anzano who came in first and .32
seconds behind UTPB’s Neal who came in second, with a time of
2:25.21.
On Saturday the Pirates come home for the first time this season to
face Incarnate Word. Meet start time is set for 2:00 pm in the
Robertson Center.
