Women's Lacrosse Succumbs to Colorado College in Conference Championship

Women's Lacrosse Succumbs to Colorado College in Conference Championship

Southwestern Women's Lacrosse was unsuccessful in attempting to win their first conference championship in Colorado Springs, falling by a margin of 24-8 to the Colorado College Tigers.

Although the loss to the Tigers was not the result the Pirates were looking for; the team continued to make program history. Senior Attacker, Raven Garcia, broke yet another record. Garcia now holds the school record for assists in a career. In her last game as a Pirate, Garcia surpassed Hayley Donnelly (17'-19') by one assist and concluded her time at Southwestern with 69 assists, 122 goals, and 191 points.

The first quarter started at a break-neck pace, with ten goals being scored between the two teams. Emma Pertuit had two goals in the first, along with Raquel Kurth and DeAnna Hames, but the Tigers found the back of the net six times, giving themselves a 6-4 lead at the end of the first.

Even though the Pirates could keep up with the Tigers early on, the Tiger offense scored at will in the second quarter, putting up six goals to the Pirates' one and taking an intimidating 12-5 halftime lead.

The Tiger offense never faltered in the second half, and it was evident the depth of the Tigers was taking a toll against the Pirates. The Tigers' ability to run multiple lines of midfielders allowed them to play at a pace the Pirates couldn't keep up. A 3-5 third quarter in favor of the Tigers totaled the game at 17-8 at the end of the third quarter.

By the time the fourth quarter came around, chances were slim for the Pirates. The Tigers' depth and their scoring proficiency put the game out of reach for Southwestern. Seven goals for Colorado College was the most they scored in a quarter for the entire game, shutting the Pirates out in the fourth.

Bright spots for the Pirates included Raven Garcia, who, on her historic day, went for two goals and two assists. Emma Pertuit had three goals and five draw controls; Goalkeeper Tessa Lewis had eleven saves against the Tigers, DeAnna Hames, and Kate Vlasek also scored for Southwestern.

The Pirates 2022 season is highlighted by an exceptional thirteen wins and only three losses. No other team in program history has eclipsed the nine-win mark, nevertheless achieving over double-digit wins. This memorable season for Pirates will undoubtedly be chased by many teams to come.
