Women's Lacrosse Defeats Piedmont

GEORGETOWN, Texas -- The Southwestern University women's lacrosse team earned their second home win against the Piedmont College Lions, winning 20-12 this Friday on Varsity Field.

In the first two minutes of the game, Southwestern dominated as Deanna Hames and Raven Garcia attacked Piedmont's goal and scored three quick goals to give the Pirates an early lead. The Lions scored one goal to a point up for them on the scoreboard, but the Pirates again scored two more goals and continued a strong lead. The Pirates totaled 14 goals in the first half with the Lions trailing with six goals. Southwestern goalie Sofia Valdespino blocked two of the eight shots taken on the Pirate goal.

Piedmont came back into the second half with some urgency on the offense back by scoring the first goal. But the Pirates answered back-to-back every goal the Lions made. With five minutes left in the game, Hames, Garcia and Raquel Kurth scored three back-to-back goals giving the Pirates a ten-point lead. Piedmont scored two more goals with the clock winding down, but the Pirates took the win ending the game 20-12. Tessa Lewis took over as the Pirate's second-half goalie and had seven saves of the ten shots taken at goal.

Hames lead the team in goals and groundballs, totaling seven goals and picking up 11 groundballs. Hames also caused four turnovers and had two assists. Emma Pertuit once again dominated draw controls, winning 24 of the 27 Southwestern took. Pertuit also scored one goal, picked up ten groundballs and had five caused turnovers. Garcia scored a total of six goals, Liana Collins scored three goals with Brynne HardwayNatasha Perez-Krause and Kurth each scoring one goal.

Southwestern women's lacrosse now improves 2-1 in the season and gets ready for their second road game against the Augustana College Vikings on Sunday, March 21 at 11 a.m. in Rock Island, Ill.
