#18 Southwestern Beat #11 Trinity In Men's Tennis

Southwestern Men's Tennis defeated Trinity at the Pirates' home courts this past Friday, April 14, 2023. The Pirates fought through the very end to win 5-4 in an outstanding performance.

In doubles, the men had some tough matches but were able to win two out of three courts. Sophomore Oscar Roy and Freshman Ashton Ellis had an impressive 8-5 win at line one doubles. Additionally, Sophomore Jared Burton and Senior Captain Steven Tibbetts won another point for the Pirates at line three doubles, 8-5. The level of play from all teams throughout doubles was unmatched.

After doubles, the Pirates were up 2-1 giving them confidence as they started singles. The Pirates carried over the positivity and high level of play from doubles to the start of singles, cheering each other on and having an intense level of energy.

Entering singles, the tension was high but the Pirates remained calm and patient. The men had lots of determination to do everything to overcome the Trinity Tigers. The energy was unmatched across all courts and everyone was encouraging each other.

In singles, the Pirates lost courts one, two, and six but were not bothered. Being motivated even more, the Pirates won courts three, four, and five. The third set wins from Freshman Ashton Ellis and Sophomore Oscar Roy, placed the overall team score to 4-4. This left court five as the last court on. It was up to Junior Ryan Flanagan in a third set with his opponent. Remaining calm and confident, Flanagan fought hard and came out on top.

This was truly a win that could not have happened without the whole team, from the individuals cheering the whole match to the doubles and singles players; this was a true team effort and win! This team has made Southwestern Men's Tennis history!

Once again, the Southwestern Men's Tennis team had an outstanding performance and was able to battle to victory, 5-4 in this nailbiter of a match. Don't forget to mark your calendars for the Conference Tournament which will be held here at Southwestern University, April 28-30, at the Pirates' home courts. See y'all in 2 weeks!
