Men’s Golf Takes Victory At San Antonio Shootout, Rodriguez Earns First Place

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - The Southwestern University men's golf team came home with a first-place victory at the San Antonio Shootout at TPC San Antonio on Tuesday. The team led wire-to-wire in a dominant victory over the field of eight teams.

The Pirates competed in a field that consisted of three top-25-ranked teams. Redlands and Willamette are both ranked 7th and 8th in the country in the Golf Coaches Association of America polls, while Schreiner is ranked 16th in GolfStat rankings.

Southwestern put together the only under-par round as a team in the first round of the tournament, shooting -1 and leading by eight strokes. Christian Rodriguez and Nicholas Hoisington catapulted the Pirates into the lead with rounds of 69 (-3) and 68 (-4), respectively. The Pirates were solid all around in the first; sophomore Matthew Peesker shot 74, and junior Logan Pullin shot 76.

The Pirates struggled to match their first-round performance but still maintained consistency across the board to hold their lead at the end of round two. Shooting 300 as a team in the second, Southwestern ended day one at +11, seven shots ahead of second-place Schreiner.

The final round of the tournament would prove to be the most challenging, with the field taking to the TPC San Antonio Oaks Course, the site of the historic PGA Tour stop, the Valero Texas Open.

Southwestern took on the challenge and fired another score of 300, the lowest of all teams for the final round. Rodriguez finished -2 for the third and -4 for the tournament, earning his fourth first-place title in his career as a Pirate. Hoisington shot 75, good for a top-five finish, and sophomore Bryce Stiemert stepped up and closed with a 76 on the challenging Oaks course.

Southwestern would go on to win by an enormous seventeen-stroke margin, proving they can excel against the top teams in the country.

Men's Golf will head to Jekyll Island, Georgia, to compete in the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational from March 17th-19th.
