SEGUIN, Texas – A warm, muggy morning coupled with a muddy
course couldn’t hold back the Pirates as they raced their way
to a second place finish at the DIII Texas Championships on
Saturday. Southwestern captured six of the top twenty slots to end
with 63 points.
Senior Dan Rudd (pictured) set the tone for the morning for SU,
running an aggressive race and starting fast, sticking with the
lead pack of runners. He finished with a season best time of 27:30
and in sixth place overall.
First-year Sam Martinez followed suit, starting off well and
placing 10th with a season best time of 28:02. Fellow first-year
Thomas Bobbitt finished third for Southwestern and 14th overall in
a time of 28:21.
Also recording a season best time was junior Allen Smith who took
16th overall and finished in 28:30 while sophomore Zach Freeland
rounded out SU’s top five with a personal best time of
28:32.3 and taking 17th place.
Senior Josh Gideon and junior Sebastian Winkler finished in 20th
and 23rd place, respectively, in times of 29:08 and 29:43. Team
captains and seniors Matt Broussard and Addison English both
finished in season best times (30:13 and 30:14) as did three-sport
athlete Sam Marsh with a time of 33:36.
The Pirates will take the momentum with them to their next
competition at the University of Incarnate Word on October 10th.
