GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - Southwestern Football fell to 0-2 on the season Saturday night in their home opener against the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs. The Pirates were plagued with turnovers throughout the game giving the Bulldogs ample opportunities to score points.

The Pirates and the Bulldogs exchanged field positions in the first half until the Bulldogs found the endzone in the final four minutes of the first quarter following an interception thrown by the Pirates. On the ensuing kick off, Southwestern fumbled the ball leading to a Texas Lutheran recovery and great field position. The Bulldogs made good on the opportunity sending them up 14-0 at the end of the first.

Towards the end of the half, another Pirate interception led to a scoring opportunity for TLU, but thirty yards of penalties for the Bulldogs on the play meant having to drive the length of the field. However, the TLU drive was capped off with a touchdown and a 21-0 lead going into halftime.

Despite the turmoil in the first half, the Pirate offense cut the lead to only two touchdowns at the nine-minute mark in the third quarter on a ten-yard touchdown pass from Damian Gomez to Coleman Robertson.

Five minutes later the Bulldogs negated the touchdown with a score of their own and a two-point conversion to tack on a 29-7 lead. From the third quarter on it was all TLU notching another touchdown and field goal to bring the final score to 39-7.

Southwestern was lead on defense with a tackling clinic put on by Blane Corekin who managed fourteen tackles in the game followed by Aidan O'Connell and Peyton Ludemann with nine and eight apiece respectively. Southwestern exchanged quarterbacks, Gomez and Jaylen Spriggs, combining for 148 yards passing with 37 rush yards from Spriggs. Graydon Thompson and Mitchell Garrett both eclipsed forty yards receiving out of the five receivers in the stat column.

The Pirates travel to their first conference game in the SAA next weekend to battle the Hendrix College Warriors on Saturday, September 16th at 1:00 PM
