Football Dominates In Second Half To Defeat TLU

SEGUIN, Texas — Southwestern football overcame an early 14-0 deficit to score three touchdowns in the second half to defeat the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs 24-14 for the Pirates' second-straight win. 

Texas Lutheran struck early, scoring touchdowns on its first two possessions. After forcing a three-and-out Southwestern possession on the game's opening drive, the Bulldogs marched down the field on an eight-play, 63-yard drive capped off by a DaKory Willis touchdown run from less than a yard out. 

After the Pirates turned the ball over on downs on the ensuing possession at the Texas Lutheran 45, the Bulldogs scored in four plays, doing most of its damage on a pass from Seth Cosme to Trent Stefka for a 45-yard touchdown.

Southwestern's defense locked in from there, forcing three consecutive three-and-out possessions and a punt to end the half. 

The momentum carried over to the second half where Southwestern scored on three consecutive possessions. Southwestern's defense forced a punt on the opening drive of the second half and the offense went down the field for an eight-play, 56 yard drive ending in a Wil Herbst 31-yard field goal. 

The Pirates forced a turnover on downs on the next TLU possession, taking the ball at the Southwestern 41-yard line and driving 59 yards and seven plays, highlighted by a 26-yard pass from quarterback Landry Gilpin to Joey Robinson and punctuated by a one-yard touchdown run by Jaquon Marion to bring the score to 14-13. 

Southwestern took the lead early in the fourth quarter on a two-yard touchdown run by Marion with Herbst making the extra point to put Southwestern ahead 18-14. The Southwestern defense made it a two-possession game when defensive lineman Noah Clarkson sacked Cosme, forcing a fumble that linebacker Bernard Sencherey recovered and returned 50 yards for the touchdown. 

Southwestern outgained Texas Lutheran 400-256 in total offensive yardage and more than doubled the Bulldogs in rushing yards 252-91. 

Marion led the Pirates attack with 22 carries for 109 yards and two touchdowns. Gilpin ran 21 times for 91 yards. Gianni Taisague carried eight times for 52 yards. Gilpin completed 15-of-33 passes with two interceptions. 

Patrick Nicolas led the Pirate defense with 12 tackles, including eight solo tackles. Aleksander Gomez and Sencherey each had seven tackles with Sencherey scoring on the fumble return. 

Southwestern improves to 3-6 with the win and 3-5 in conference play. The Pirates will close out the season at home against Sul Ross State on Saturday, Nov. 13.
