Pirates opener called after multiple weather delays

GEORGETOWN – The Southwestern University football team will have to wait another week for their first official game as Saturday night's opener against Hardin-Simmons was called after multiple weather delays.

The game was declared a no contest per NCAA rules and as agreed on by both head coach, Joe Austin of Southwestern and Jesse Burleson of HSU, and both schools administrators. A non-conference contest, the game will not be rescheduled while statistics for the game will not be counted as official and not count toward season totals.

The Pirates will host Sul Ross State at 1 p.m. next Saturday for Military Day in what will now be the official season opener for Southwestern. Hardin-Simmons will host Texas Lutheran in Abilene.

Southwestern had taken a 7-0 lead after the first quarter, but the Cowboys scored 21-unanswered points to take a 21-7 lead into halftime. HSU led the Pirates 28-7 when the game was called.
