GEORGETOWN – Southwestern University football head coach Joe Austin announced the addition of two new staff members as the Pirates opened fall Thursday morning.

Garrett Winsett and Chad Ellis both joined the Pirate football coaching staff as Winsett will take charge of the wide receivers and Ellis will oversee the running backs.

Garrett Winsett joins the Pirate football coaching staff after two seasons as a graduate assistant at the University Memphis.

As a member of Head Coach Justin Fuente and Offensive Coordinator Darrell Dickey's offensive staff, Winsett worked with the wide receivers and running backs. He was also tasked with pregame video preparations on the offensive side of the ball and helped with the return game on special teams.

Winsett joined the Memphis staff from TCU where he both played and served as a student coach. He helped with in-game adjustments with the wide receivers for head coach Gary Patterson's staff while working under co-offensive coordinator Rusty Burns.

Winsett was a member of the winningest senior class in TCU history capturing 45 wins. The senior class advanced to five consecutive bowl games (winning four) which included winning the 2011 Rose Bowl over Wisconsin.

A back injury prior to his junior season ended Winsett's playing career as a slot receiver for the Horned Frogs. He went on to serve as a student coach for TCU's wide receivers in 2011. He also served as a lead academic learning assistant in the TCU athletic department in 2011, tutoring and mentoring TCU student-athletes.

Winsett graduated from TCU in December 2011 with a degree in Communications Studies-Human Relations.

Ellis joins the Pirate football coaching staff after spending the previous two seasons at Texas Lutheran University.

Ellis worked with the defensive line during his two years for SCAC member Texas Lutheran. During his second season with the Bulldogs they claimed their first SCAC Championship in their first season as league members sweeping through the conference.

Prior to working for his alma mater, Ellis was a two-year starter at defensive end for the Bulldogs after transferring from Michigan Tech.

A native of Petoskey, Mich., Ellis graduated from Texas Lutheran in 2012.

CAMP NOTES

Pirate football reported to camp with over 90 players on day one … last year Southwestern started camp with 103 players in the first season of football in over 60 years … Among the class was 30 newcomers … the Pirates ran through drills for over two hours in the morning and will continue with meetings during the evening … Coach Austin noted an improved tempo on the first day and compared the day to last year the team has made great strides … Austin continued to talk about constant improvement every day, but likes the direction of the fall after the first day
