Southwestern University had a solid showing in the first day of action at the SCAC Track and Field Championships in Sewanee, GA on Friday.

Junior Avery Sheppard won the preliminary race in the 400 meter dash in a personal best and SU record time of 49.68. Sheppard was also a finals qualifier in the 110 meter hurdles in a time of 15.99.

Daniel Rudd scored three points for Southwestern with a personal best time of 34:12.34 in the 10K.

On the women's side, Taylin Eckols recorded a personal best by two feet in the shot put with a throw of 31' 04". That throw was good enough to capture twelfth place in the event. Nekia Tharps captured ninth place in the long jump with a 15' 09" mark.

In the preliminary races, Tharps qualified for finals in the 100 meter hurdles in fifth place at 16.41 and Kelly Myers just missed out on the finals placing ninth in the same event with a time of 17.14. Tharps also finished in fifth place and qualified for finals in the 100 m dash with a 13.29 time.

The Pirates continue the competition on Saturday at Sewanee.
