During his tenure as Head Coach of the Southwestern Pirate Men's Basketball Team, Paul Peak was one of the most successful coaches in University history. In his 13 seasons, from 1978 through 1990, Coach Peak led the Pirates to 12 NAIA post season tournaments. Coach Peak compiled an overall record of 226 wins and 158 defeats for a .589 winning percentage. Three of Peak's teams - in 1985, 1986, and 1990 advanced to the NAIA National Tournament as District IV Champions. The 1990 team received the prestigious James Naismith - Emil S. Liston Sportsmanship Award during their appearance in Kansas City at the National Championship. Five Pirate players were named to the NAIA All-America Team for eight seasons during Peak's tenure at Southwestern: Mike Thompson (1980, 1981), Andra Higgs (1984), Bobby Deaton (1985, 1986), Ray Baranco (1987, 1990), and Ron Chovanec (1990). In addition, Bobby Deaton was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucs of the NBA at the conclusion of his Southwestern career playing for Coach Peak.
