William Carson "Nemo" Herrera '21 took his first coaching job in 1927 at Lanier High School where he coached all major sports. He took his teams to the state playoffs every year from 1937-1945 and won state titles in 1943 and 1945. In 1947, at El Paso's Bowie High School, he led the Bears to a state baseball championship. At El Paso's Coronado High School, he became known as a basketball and baseball coach. In 1967, Herrera was inducted into the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor. In 1970, at age 70, he began a second career as a civilian sports coordinator at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio. When he retired from Kelly, 11 years later, the base officially named its youth center after him. In 1974, SU's Alumni Association presented Herrera with the Citation of Merit Award for his service to the community. While coaching and teaching in El Paso, he was named "Teacher of the Year" six times. In 1979, he was inducted into the El Paso Hall of Honor. Herrera's spouse, Beverly, and their two children live in Upper Arlington, Ohio.
