Walden claims SCAC Championship

BOERNE, Texas – Ali Walden battled a relentless field Tuesday to hold on and win individual medalist honors at the 2014 SCAC Women's Golf Championships at Tapatio Springs Golf Club.

Walden held off Brigette Lee of Trinity and Jamie Wright of Centenary to finish with back-to-back rounds under 80. The senior posted scores of 76 and 79 to take a 155 score for the championship and a one stroke lead over Wright.

Teammates Bernice Leonard and Keeley Coburn picked up top 10 finishes to help Southwestern to a runner-up finish.

Southwestern and Trinity battled back and forth all day as the two teams traded the lead over the final nine holes. Coming down to the final hole of the tournament not only saw Walden claim individual honors, but Trinity jump one stroke ahead of the Pirates in the team standings.

Trinity finished at 646 while Southwestern posted a team score of 647 to finish second. Schreiner finished third at 663 while Centenary finished at 687 and Texas Lutheran at 755.

Leonard battled back to post a second round score of 82 and finished with a 163 and tied for 7th. Coburn finished in 10th all by herself after an 81 in the final round to card a 165, just 10 strokes back of Walden.

The duo of Alexis Gonzalez and Lauren Boone also narrowly missed top 10 finishes and helping the Pirates edge Trinity as both golfers finished tied for 12th. Gonzalez carded an 87 Tuesday while Boone posted a score of 90 giving both a total of 169 for the championship.

Southwestern will wait to see their fate and if they earn a return trip to the NCAA National Championships May 13-16 at Howey-In-The-Hills, Florida.
