GEORGETOWN, Texas — Southwestern softball got spectacular pitching performances from first-years Taylor McKenzie and Madison Vela but uneven run support, leading to the Pirates splitting today's doubleheader with Centenary.

Game 1: Southwestern 1, Centenary 0

McKenzie set the tone in the first inning with two strikeouts to one hit and dominated throughout, throwing a complete-game shutout. The first-year from Glen Rose, Texas, struck out nine of the 25 hitters she faced, allowing only three hits with one walk.

After Southwestern's defense retired the side in order in the second and third innings, the Pirates plated the game's only run in the bottom of the third on a two-out, RBI double to left field off the bat of Sam Martinez, scoring Alex Fletes, who opened the inning with a single.

McKenzie closed strong, striking out the final two Centenary hitters to end the game and earn her fourth victory of the season. The standout first-year now has 90 strikeouts this season with a 2.65 ERA.

Maddie Mefford and Fletes each had two hits for Southwestern. Martinez, Jessey Nunez, and Erica Otto each had one hit.

Game 2: Centenary 3, Southwestern 2

Centenary scored on an error in the top of the ninth inning, giving the Ladies the edge in a classic pitching duel between Southwestern's Vela and Centenary's Anna Scarbock.

Vela surrendered one run in each of the first two innings, allowing a walk and RBI-single in the first and a leadoff home run in the second.

The Pirates plated both their runs in the bottom of the first, opening the inning with back-to-back singles from Jodi Millhouse and Erica Otto, scoring Millhouse on a groundout to shortstop by Martinez and an RBI single by Mefford.

Vela settled into a solid performance the rest of the way, finishing with five strikeouts and five hits surrendered.

Centenary opened the ninth inning with a single by Jaymee Wilkinson, then scored when Stout reached on an error.

Southwestern improves to 9-22 with a 4-10 conference record. The Pirates and Ladies will conclude their three-game series tomorrow at noon.
