Southwestern Splits Doubleheaders In Series Against Schreiner

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Southwestern University softball team split a doubleheader series against the Schreiner University Mountaineers with a 3-4 loss and a 2-1 win this Saturday evening at Taylor-Sanders Field. Both games went to nine innings.

Game 1 – Schreiner 4, Southwestern 3

In the top of the first inning, Schreiner scored the first run of the game with a home run by their shortstop. In the next two innings, the Pirates were held to zero hits while Schreiner kept their one-point lead. Then once again in the top of the third, the Mountaineers scored two more runs, extending their lead 3-0 with the Pirates struggling to score any runs. As the game drew near the seventh inning, in the top of the sixth Izzy Richey singled up the middle and hit in Maddie Mefford to score the first run for Southwestern. The Pirates kept the inning going as Southwestern's Sam Martinez earned a walk-off to the Schreiner pitcher with the bases loaded, allowing Richey to score the second run. Before the inning concluded, Alex Fletes stole home in between a pitch, tying the game 3-3. Both teams battled it out in the seventh in and eight innings, with neither team able to get a run to end the game. But in the top of the ninth inning, a Schreiner batter doubled to hit in one of their runners to score the fourth run. Southwestern was unable to answer back in the bottom of the ninth, and the game ended with a Mountaineer win.

Game 1 – Southwestern 2, Schreiner 1

In the second game, both Southwestern and Schreiner kept each other from scoring in the first three innings. With each team desperate to put up points, Southwestern was the first to get a run on the board in the bottom of the fourth, with Martinez hitting in Rylee Rudloff to make the game 1-0. Southwestern was able to hold off Schreiner in the fifth and sixth inning, however, the Mountaineers were able to bat in a run at the top of the seventh, tying the game. With the second game going into extra innings, much like the first game, both teams battled to score first and take the lead. There were no runs in the eighth inning, and the game went to a ninth inning. Schreiner was unable to score again, but in the bottom of the ninth, with the bases loadedMefford singled to second base to send Kathryn Dull in to score the winning run for the Pirates.

Southwestern softball will finish their final game against the Mountaineers on Sunday, March 28 at 1 p.m.
