Late Penalty Kick Puts Men's Soccer Past Occidental

Late Penalty Kick Puts Men's Soccer Past Occidental

SAN ANTONIO — Skyler Frey scored two goals for the Southwestern men's soccer team, including the game-winner on a penalty kick with less than 15 minutes remaining to deliver the Pirates a 2-1 victory over the Occidental Tigers.

Frey scored the Pirates' first goal in the first five minutes of the game. Southwestern defender Eric Jorgensen created the opportunity with a high-arching pass from midfield, dropping the ball in perfectly to Jackson DeHaven in the box between the backline defenders and goalkeeper. When the defense converged on DeHaven, the sophomore found Frey in front of a wide-open net for the score.

Occidental scored a pair of goals within five minutes of each other near the end of the first half. Adrian Paredes capitalized on a penalty kick 35 minutes into the match, followed by Matthew Teplitz's goal on a feed from Max Stanely just under 40 minutes into the game to give Occidental a 2-1 lead at the half.

Ashton Bynum tied the game for the Pirates at the 61:41 mark on a throw-in triggered by midfielder Scott Wilson. The ball went off the head of Occidental defender Neython Streitz, who was fighting Southwestern's Andrew Hernandez for position and went sailing towards a scrum in front of the net. Bynum was quickest to react, wrapping the shot around a defender for the equalizer.

Southwestern's game-winning penalty kick came when Paredes struck Jorgensen in the back of the head, earning a red card and a penalty kick for the Pirates. Occidental keeper Scott Drazen guessed left, and Frey sent the ball the other way into the back of the net for the game-winner.

Frey ended the week with five points, scoring the two goals today with the penalty kick game-winner for four points and delivering an assist in Southwestern's 3-0 victory over McMurry in the season-opener.

Southwestern ends the season's first week with a 2-1 record, dropping Occidental to 1-2. The Pirates will host the University of Texas at Dallas Comets on Friday, Sept. 10, at 7:00 p.m.
