Men's Soccer Battles Centenary To A Draw In Hard-Fought SCAC Semifinals 

SHREVEPORT, La. — The Southwestern University men's soccer team preserved its unbeaten season but failed to advance in the SCAC Championship Tournament, battling the Centenary Gentlemen to a double-overtime scoreless draw and falling in penalty kicks.

Both teams created plenty of opportunities, combining for 38 shots with 11 on goal. Though Southwestern generated more shots on goal, Centenary got a stellar performance from goalkeeper Sami Borchalli, who recorded eight saves.

Southwestern had several early opportunities with shots from Mofe AriyoSkyler Frey, and Rodrigo Suarez, ending in a block and two saves. However, the Gents settled into a rhythm and controlled possession for much of the first half, firing off seven shots to Southwestern's four, with only one on goal. Centenary also had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks before the break.

The Centenary attack was ambitious in the second half, taking ten shots while Southwestern generated seven. Pirate goalkeeper Jack Viles made two big saves in the half and, with the help of the defense, forced the game into overtime.

In the first overtime, Centenary and Southwestern took two shots each, with Frey taking both for the Pirates. With no goals scored, both teams prepared for a second overtime. The Pirates took shots five shots in the final overtime, but Borchalli stopped the two on goal, forcing the game to go to a penalty shoot-out.

The penalty shoot-out went to eight total shots. Centenary missed their first shot and a shot by Southwestern's Jackson DeHaven was saved. After Dehaven's shot, Centenary made the next three goals while Ariyo was the only Pirate to make his shot. The game ended on a missed shot by Brendan Prather, with Centenary winning 3-1. Centenary will now advance to the SCAC men's soccer final. Southwestern men's soccer ends their season record 4-0-4 in SCAC play.
