Women’s Tennis ITA Highlights

GEORGETOWN, TX- This year's ITA Division III Women's Southwest Regional Championship took place on the campus of Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, TX. Despite not winning the singles or doubles Championship, the Pirates showed some incredible grit, resilience, and poise throughout the tournament.

Below, were the eight women who competed in the singles championship draw for the Pirates.

Impressively, on the first day, seven of the eight Pirates advanced from the first round of singles. Facing tough competition in the round of 32, Senior Sydney Wahl, Freshman Mary Young, and Freshman Hattie Berend all moved on to compete in the round of 16. In the round of 16, the Pirates were knocked out of singles. Wahl had a hard fought, impressive three set match where she unfortunately did not win but battled to the very end.

In the championship doubles draw, the Pirates prepared to compete again. The Pirates had four doubles teams competing and had three teams win their first round, moving onto the round of 16. Unfortunately the team of Junior Lauren Chisholm and Senior Sydney Wahl were defeated in the round of 16. However, the two teams of Sophomore Daryl Locke and Freshman Mary Young along with Junior Lydia Lee and Freshman Hattie Berend, all moved into the quarter-finals!

The Pirates were proudly represented in the semi-finals of the Championship doubles draw by Lydia Lee and Hattie Berend. In the tough battle of the semi-finals, Lee and Berend were defeated but represented the Pirates extremely well!

The Pirates close out their fall season on a very high note in the ITA Division III Women's Southwest Regional Championship. The spring season will pick back up in February. Until then, the Pirates will be putting in the hard work and time on and off the court!
