The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) released its final NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Rankings, keeping Southwestern at No. 20 and ending at No. 7 in the West Region.
Southwestern posted a 16-5 record this season, finishing as the runner-up in the SCAC Tournament. The Pirates had signature wins against then-ranked No. 12 Denison, No. 19 Skidmore, and over No. 4 Kenyon — the highest-ranked win in program history. The women also played a competitive match against No. 1 Chicago in a loss.
"Six consecutive years inside the Top 25 is simply remarkable. It's validation that we are successful on a consistent basis with the best of the best," Southwestern head tennis coach Billy Porter says. "Culture plays a huge role in this, and it's very cool to see the standard maintained while being made its own with every team that's a bit different every year."
Southwestern had no nationally-ranked individuals but did finish with two regionally-ranked singles players in Nina Mitrofanova and Taylor Despriet. Mitrofanova is no. 13 in the West Region. She finished the season with a 10-5 singles record in dual meets and won The Ojai singles championship and SCAC Women's Tennis Player of the Year. Despriet won 11 of 16 singles matches in dual meets, including 8-4 at the No. 2 spot.
Mitrofanova and Lydia Lee finished ranked No. 9 in the West Region in doubles. The duo went 11-6, earning All-SCAC First Team. Alli Ziehm and Emma Kesterson finished ranked No. 14. The pair finished the season 8-5, including 7-4 at No. 2 doubles, and also won the ITA Fall Regional Doubles Championship, becoming All-Americans.
"It's disappointing not to have any individuals ranked," Porter says. "It's something we can use as added fuel going into next year from a motivational standpoint."
