
GEORGETOWN, Texas — Southwestern women's tennis faced Concordia shorthanded with Nina Mitrofanova, Lydia Lee, and head coach Billy Porter traveling to California for The Ojai Tennis Tournament, but still prevailed 9-0.
Lauren Chisholm and Taylor Despriet opened the match with an 8-0 win over Kayla Pena and Natalia Goodman at No. 2 doubles. Then, Sydney Wahl and Chandler Vrba defeated Claire Austin and Trinity Klamecki 8-3 at No. 3 doubles, and Alli Ziehm and Emma Kesterson won 8-3 against Isabella Wiik and Kaitlin Stevens.
"Assistant Coach Tosha Smith stepped up tonight, leading the way while I was traveling with Nina and Lydia," Porter says. "Chandler steps into the doubles lineup against and contributes another win. She's come a long way on the doubles court in her four years."
Wahl carried the momentum over into singles, posting a 6-0, 6-1 win over Austin at No. 3 singles. Meeshti Shethia followed with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Kaitlin Stevens at No. 6 singles, followed by Kesterson defeating Wiik 6-2, 6-0.
Chisholm bested Klamecki 6-1, 6-0, Ziehm won 6-2 6-2 over Goodman at No. 5 singles, and Despriet gutted out a three-set victory over Kayla Pena at No. 1 singles, winning 6-0, 4-6, 10-3.
"Taylor got her first win at No. 1 by pulling out a 10-point breaker," Porter says.
Southwestern improves to 13-4. The Pirates will host Sul Ross State on Friday in the final match before the SCAC Championships begin on Friday, April 29.
