Women's Tennis Defeats St. Thomas

HOUSTON — The No. 16-ranked Southwestern women's tennis team picked up another conference win, defeating the University of St. Thomas Celts 9-0.

Nina Mitrofanova and Lydia Lee opened with an 8-3 win over Anamaria Gonzalez and Alejandra Lopez at No. 1 doubles, and Alli Ziehm and Emma Kesterson followed suit with an 8-3 win over Alyssa Davila and Jenny Reynolds at No. 2 doubles, getting stronger as the match wore on.

"Alli and Emma didn't play their best and at 4-3 changed gears to finish off the match," Southwestern head tennis coach Billy Porter says. "Their energy increased, as did their play."

Lauren Chisholm and Taylor Despriet finished the doubles sweep with an 8-0 victory over Karissa Guzman and Regina Lopez.

Southwestern was perfect with 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 3 and 5 singles. Kesterson defeated Davila for the second time on the day, and Chisholm won against Guzman.

At the top of the lineup, Mitrofanova defeated Gonzalez 6-0, 6-1, and Despriet won 6-3, 6-3 against Lopez.

"Nina played well today against a strong player, and I was impressed with her performance," Porter says. "Taylor was in a battle and fought hard until the very end. She served well in that long game to close it out against a tricky opponent."

Sydney Wahl and Ziehm picked up a pair of 6-0, 6-1 wins at No. 4 and 6 singles, defeating Reynolds and Lopez.

Southwestern improves to 11-3 with a 3-0 conference record. The Pirates will host Schreiner next Thursday at 5:00 p.m.
