Women's Tennis Returns, Defeats Whitman

GEORGETOWN, Texas — The Southwestern women's tennis team returned to action for its first match in 12 days, defeating the Whitman Blues 6-3.

"This was an incredible win by our team after being off the last few days for spring break," Southwestern head tennis coach Billy Porter says. "They came out focused and battled a very tough Whitman team."

Whitman's Angel Le and Arianna Castellanos scored an 8-5 victory over Nina Mitrofanova and Lydia Lee in No. 1 doubles, but the Pirates bounced back with a pair of 8-5 wins in the other two doubles matches.

Alli Ziehm and Emma Kesterson defeated Erica Mock and Camilla Tarpey-Schwed in No. 2 doubles, and Lauren Chisholm and Taylor Despriet bested Ilina Jha and Grace Carter in No. 3 doubles.

"Our doubles was once against very strong at No. 2 and 3, giving us a big boost going into singles," Porter says. "Alli stepped up today, nursing an injury she played through."

Le scored a second point for Whitman, defeating Mitrofanova in three sets by a score of 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 in No. 1 singles. Despriet won 6-3, 7-5 over Arianna Castellanos in No. 2 singles. Kesterson scored a pair of 6-3 sets to take her match against Mock in No. 3 singles. Sydney Wahl won 7-5, 7-5 over Jha. Tarpey-Schwed defeated Lee 6-4, 6-7, 16-14, and Chisholm defeated Thorp 6-3, 6-2.

"With Alli out of singles, Lauren filled in and performed well," Porter says. "Emma, Taylor, and Sydney all battled and found ways to win."

The No. 14-ranked Pirates improve to 5-1. On Friday, Southwestern will travel to play No. 19-ranked Skidmore, then face No. 12 Mary Washington on Saturday.
