CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Southwestern's Nina Mitrofanova closed the gap some in her rematch with Emory's Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico but lost in two sets in the Round of 32 at the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Individual Championship.

Mitrofanova faced Gonzalez-Rico, the top-ranked player in the tournament, just days after going head-to-head with her in No. 1 singles of Southwestern's dual match against Emory in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals. Gonzales-Rico won with a pair of 6-1 sets in Emory's 5-0 victory over Southwestern to advance to the semifinals and, ultimately, winning a national championship.

The rematch opened the same way, with Gonzalez-Rico taking the first set 6-1. Mitrofanova struggled with a first-serve percentage of 58 while Gonzalez-Rico was 13-for-18 (72 percent) of first-serve points won.

Mitrofanova settled down in the second set with a first-serve percentage of 75 (27-for-36), edging out Gonzalez-Rico in first-serve points won at 56 percent to 54 percent, in a 6-4 loss.

With the loss, Mitrofanova wraps up a successful season, leading Southwestern to its first conference title and earning the highest regional ranking in program history. She was All-SCAC First Team, posting an 11-7 record, including 9-6 at No. 1 singles, while playing multiple matches against scholarship programs to qualify for her first NCAA Individual Championship.
