Mitrofanova To Face Gonzalez-Rico In NCAA Individual Championships

The NCAA announced the draws for the 2021 NCAA Division III Individual Championships, setting the stage for a rematch of NCAA Tournament quarterfinals opponents with Southwestern women's tennis player Nina Mitrofanova facing Emory's Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico in the first round.

Gonzalez-Rico, the No. 1 seed in the tournament and top-ranked tennis player in the Atlantic South Region, defeated Mitrofanova 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals match between Southwestern and Emory on her way to leading the Eagles to the national championship. She posted an 8-2 record this season at No. 1 singles, going undefeated at the NCAA Tournament.

"Nina just saw her opponent on Monday, and I am hopeful that playing her recently will help her on Friday morning," Head Women's Tennis Coach Billy Porter says. "Drawing the 1 seed in the first round is never fun, but Nina is the type to embrace it."

Mitrofanova posted an 11-7 record this season, going 9-6 at No. 1 singles while playing multiple matches against higher divisions of competition. She is currently the No. 2-ranked tennis player in the West Region.

Mitrofanova and Gonzalez-Rico will begin tomorrow at 8 a.m. CST at the Champions Tennis Club in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Whoever advances will face the winner of the match between Wesleyan's Katie Fleischman and Macalester's Arista Siebrits.
