Women's Tennis Advances To SCAC Championship Match

SAN ANTONIO — The top-seeded Southwestern women's tennis team advanced to its fifth consecutive SCAC Championship match with a 5-0 victory over the fourth-seeded Schreiner University Mountaineers.

Southwestern made a few tweaks to its doubles lineup and came away with a clean sweep. Nina Mitrofanova and Mariana Quetzeri opened the match with an 8-1 victory over Blair Villarreal and Katelyn Ruiz in the No. 2 spot. Esther Bowers and Taylor Despriet followed with an 8-2 win over Jennifer Garcia and Victoria Morales in the top spot. Allie Ziehm and Emma Kesterson closed doubles with an 8-4 win over Lindsey Reynolds and Rachel Rompel in No. 3 doubles.

"Mariana and Nina Mitrofanova were a new team and looked sharp," head coach Billy Porter said. "Taylor and Esther were another change in our doubles lineup at No. 1, and they played well together."

Nina Elez opened singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 straight sets victory over Rompel in No. 4 singles, and then Bowers clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Morales in No. 2 singles. Both Mitrofanova and Kesterson were up a set in No. 1 and 3 singles.

"Making it back to our fifth consecutive SCAC Championship is special," Porter said. "Having to go indoors after a five-hour delay made things tricky."

Southwestern improves to 14-4 with the win. The Pirates will face host and defending champion Trinity University on Sunday, May 2 at 3:00 p.m.
