Women's Tennis Defeats Schreiner

GEORGETOWN, Texas — The Southwestern University Pirates women's tennis team found some success with new doubles lineups and carried the momentum to a 9-0 victory over the Schreiner Mountaineers.

All three Southwestern doubles teams posted 8-0 victories. Alli Ziehm and Nina Elez opened with a win over Rachel Rompel and Lindsey Reynolds in No. 3 doubles. Emma Kesterson and Taylor Despriet followed with a win over Jennifer Garcia and Victoria Morales in the top spot. Esther Bowers and Mariana Quetzeri closed doubles with a win over Blair Villarreal and Katelyn Ruiz.

"We changed all three doubles teams and it was the best doubles we played all year," head coach Billy Porter said. "Emma and Taylor beat a good team at No. 1 and I like how we played on all three courts."

Sydney Wahl continued her solid play, defeating Villarreal 6-1, 6-0 in No. 3 singles, followed by Bowers with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Morales to clinch. Nina Mitrofanova won against Garcia 6-2, 6-2 at the top spot. Ziehm defeated Rompel 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 singles, Quetzeri bested Ruiz 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5, and Chandler Vrba closed the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Reynolds.

"Nina Mitrofanova played one of her better matches of the year against a solid player. I thought she made more balls and made her path to victory easier on herself," Porter said. "Mariana hasn't played singles in some time and was lights out tonight. Great to see her play as well as she did."

Southwestern improves to 9-4 with the win. The Pirates will host the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Thursday, April 9 at 5:00 p.m.
