SEGUIN, Texas – The No. 21-ranked Southwestern University Pirates women's tennis team shutout the Texas Lutheran University Bulldogs on their own court, winning the match 9-0.

Southwestern swept doubles with a trio of 8-0 wins. In the No. 1 spot, Esther Bowers and Nina Mitrofanova defeated Samantha Stafford and Kaitlyn Enloe while Mary Cardone and Emma Kesterson bested Mary Eby and Madison Starr in the No. 2 position.

In No. 3 doubles, Isabel Candelario and Meeshti Shethia got an opportunity and defeated Liz Perkins and Jade Sosa.

"Isabel and [Meeshti] were very strong at the three spot and gave us a big boost in doubles," Head Coach Billy Porter said.

In singles competition, Porter mixed up his rotation, giving several players opportunities in new spots with other players getting the rest of the competition off.

Nina Elez stepped into the No. 1 spot, defeating Stafford 6-1, 6-0 and Mariana Quetzeri defeated Eby 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 2 position. Taylor Despriet had the same score in the No. 3 position, defeating Starr while Cecile Wilde won a pair of 6-1 sets to best Enloe in the No. 4 position.

Chandler Vrba won a 6-1, 6-3 match against Liz Perkins in No. 5 singles and Sara Lee shutout Sosa 6-0, 6-0 in No. 6 singles.

"Sara competed at a very high level and got a great win at the sixth spot for us," Porter said. "It's always great to get a conference road win and I feel that our girls who weren't playing created a tremendous atmosphere like a home match."

With the win, the Pirates improve to 7-1 on the season. Southwestern will make its second trip to California to compete in matches from March 13-15 to play Cal Lutheran, Pomona-Pitzer (6), and Bowdoin (10).
