GEORGETOWN, Texas – The No. 22-ranked Southwestern University Pirates women's tennis team swept the McMurry War Hawks 9-0 to win their second match of the day.

Mary Cardone and Emma Kesterson scored an 8-1 victory over Gabrielle Ellwanger and Neah Garza to get the ball rolling for the Pirates in No. 2 doubles. In the No. 3 spot, Mariana Quetzeri made her doubles season debut, teaming with Alli Ziehm in an 8-2 victory over Kiara Jones and Mandy Roberson.

Esther Bowers and Nina Mitrofanova finished doubles with an 8-2 victory in No. 1 doubles over Claire Hillyer and Hope Turner.

"Mariana saw action for the first time this year in doubles, pairing up with Alli," Head Coach Billy Porter said. "They looked good together. They attacked the net well and saw the difference when they didn't. Overall, a solid performance.

Nina Elez earned the Pirates' first win in singles, defeating Morgan Parnell 6-1, 6-0 in No. 4 singles. Kesterson followed with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Ellwanger to clinch the match for Southwestern from the third spot.

Cardone defeated Hillyer in straight sets in No. 1 singles and Bowers surrendered only a single point in a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Garza in No. 2 singles. Taylor Despriet was flawless in No. 5 singles with a pair of 6-0 sets to defeat Roberson and Cecile Wilde ended the day with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Turner in No. 6 singles.

"Taylor cruised in her match and was just consistent all day long making it very difficult on her opponent," Porter said. "Cecile was the last match on and faced a tricky opponent. She held it together and found a way to pull it out."

With the win, the Pirates are now 6-1 on the season. Southwestern will travel to Seguin on Friday, March 6 to face the Texas Lutheran University Bulldogs.
