Women's Tennis Finishes Second in the SCAC Championship Tournament

SHERMAN, Texas – The Southwestern University Pirates women's tennis team lost 5-2 to the defending Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) champion Trinity University Tigers in the SCAC Championship match.

Southwestern was swept in doubles with Mary Kaffen and Zoe Kaffen defeating Esther Bowers and Cecile Wilde 8-6 in the No. 1 match. Mary Cardone and Mariana Quetzeri lost to Caroline Kutach and Megan Flores 8-3 in the No. 2 match and Nina Elez and Stephanie Bartusov lost to Andrea De Leon and Francesca Canjar 8-2 in the No. 3 match.

"Our doubles weren't particularly great today but I thought Esther and Cece played well," Head Coach Billy Porter said.

Cardone had a strong performance in the No. 1 singles match, defeating Kutach 6-3, 6-1, and Bowers defeated Ashley DeBauge in three sets (6-2, 4-6, 6-3).

"Mary has a huge win that should secure her a spot into NCAA's," Porter said. "Esther was clutch again when it mattered in the third set."

The Tigers clinched with the No. 3 and 4 matches. Quetzeri took the first set 6-3 against Kaffen but dropped the next two 4-6 and 2-6. Elez lost in straight sets to De Leon. Wilde trailed in the first set in the No. 5 spot and Meeshti Shethia was ahead in the first set in the No. 6 position when the matches ended.

"This was such an enjoyable group that bought into what we asked them to and even though we didn't accomplish our goal, they certainly have plenty to be proud of," Porter said.
