No. 24 Southwestern Fall to St Edward's in Opener

AUSTIN, Texas - The 24th-ranked Southwestern University women's tennis team dropped their opener to a tough Division II St. Edward's squad, 8-1, on Friday evening at the Austin Tennis Academy.

The Pirates shook things up a little bit in doubles as three pairing played together for the very first time as Southwestern fell in all three doubles contests. Sophomore Mary Cardone and freshman Mariana Quetzeri dropped a close 8-5 contest at No. 1 doubles while seniors Julie Swets and Nicole Wilson fell 8-4 at No. 3 doubles. Senior Maranda Kahl and sophomore Cecile Wilde took an 8-3 loss at No. 2 doubles.

In singles action, Southwestern seems to step their game up and play solid tennis. Wilde put together a tremendous outing at No. 4 singles as she battled back and pulled off the lone point for the Pirates in three sets, 5-7, 7-6, 10-8. Wilde dropped the first set after leading 5-2, but bounced back to take the tiebreaker in the second set, and closed the match out in the 10-point tiebreaker in set three.

Cardone was solid as well in singles action, falling in three sets 6-2, 3-6, 4-10. Despite falling in straight sets, Wilson played a really good match in her loss at No. 2 singles, 3-6, 2-6.

"Cecile (Wilde) was able to turn around and earn a fantastic win," said Head Coach Billy Porter. "We're going to take the weekend to recover, get back after it on Monday, and we look forward to playing Sul Ross in our home opener on Monday night."

The Pirates start off at 0-1, but will look to bounce back on Thursday evening as they welcome in Sul Ross St. for their home opener at 5 PM.
