Pirate women fall in SCAC Third Place match

SAN ANTONIO – The 2013-14 season came to an end Sunday morning as the Southwestern University women's tennis team fell 5-1 to Colorado College in the third place match at the SCAC Women's Tennis Championships.

The Pirates finished the season 9-6 and had swept through all SCAC opponents during the regular season with the exception of Trinity – the Pirates and Tigers did not meet. The Pirates also finished 1-2 on the year against regionally ranked teams.

Colorado College was able to pick up a win against Southwestern after falling to the Pirates in the regular season finale last weekend. A win that saw the Pirates edge out a 5-4 win, however Sunday was all Tigers.

The Tigers jumped out to an early lead in doubles action taking wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.

Gabby Hunt and Virginia Stofer won the only point for the Pirates with an 8-6 victory at No. 2 doubles. The duo improved to 9-6 on the year while Heba Abdul and Marieke Visser dropped to just 11-4 on the year at No. 3 doubles.

Singles action was all Tigers as they took wins at No. 3 and No. 4 positions in the lineup. The final point came at the No. 1 position where Aimee Blake dropped a hard-fought match, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Southwestern finished the season ranked No. 19 in the ITA West Region. The Pirates were one of three SCAC teams ranked in the top 20 with No. 8 Trinity and No. 18 Schreiner.
