On Friday (Mar. 28) afternoon, the Southwestern University women's tennis team handed Temple College a 9-0 loss while the men's team dropped a 7-2 decision in Georgetown, TX.

The Pirates got off to a strong start by sweeping the doubles matches. The top doubles team of Leslie Smith (Temple, TX/Temple HS) and Emily Gutzmer (Austin, TX/Anderson HS) won 8-3 while Mary Pennington (San Antonio, TX/Churchill HS) and Laura Evanoff (Breckenridge, TX/Breckenridge HS) lost just once en route to an 8-1 victory. The first-year duo of Kelly Finn (Wichita Falls, TX/Burkburnett HS) and Sara Fitzsimmons (Garland, TX/Garland HS) pulled out an 8-4 win.
In singles, five of the six matches were decided in just two sets. Smith won the first flight 6-3, 6-0 and Pennington took her number two match 6-1, 6-0. Evanoff and Gutzmer won 6-2, 6-0 and 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, respectively. Allison Noblitt (Lake Jackson, TX/Brazoswood HS) won a hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 match and Charlotte Huskey (DeLand, FL/DeLand HS) was victorious, 6-0, 6-1.
Temple Men 7, Southwestern Men 2
The men fell in an 0-3 hole after the doubles matches as the number one team of Nick Parker (Wharton, TX/Wharton HS) and CJ Esquivel (Houston, TX/Lamar Consolidated HS) fell 8-6. Dan Otto (Austin, TX/Lake Forest College) and Michael Party (Midland, TX/Florida Tech) fell 8-3 while the duo of Charles Prince (Port Arthur, TX/Memorial HS) and D'Artagnan Bebel (The Woodlands, TX/Oak Ridge HS) lost a heartbreaker 9-8.
The Pirates two wins came in singles as Prince took his match in three sets, 6-3, 0-6, 7-5. Bebel also picked up a win in the sixth slot, also winning in three sets, 6-4, 6-7, 10-6. Otto lost in the second flight 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
With the victory, the women are now 6-5 for the year and the men's season record drops to 2-8.
Southwestern hosts the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Friday (Apr. 4) with the match set to begin at 2:00 pm.
