Women's Tennis able to Weather the Storm Against UTRGV

Southwestern Women's Tennis played a hard fought match against UTRGV, February 17, 2023. The high level of competition was very beneficial for the team's growth although they took a 1-8 loss.

Throughout doubles, the teams left it all out on the court. Seniors, Nina Mitrofanova and Emma Kesterson had a nail biting match. The two were extremely successful in playing more aggressively and winning points from the net. Proud of every doubles team, Coach Porter stated, "We did a tremendous job in doubles coming in and applying pressure. We've spent a lot of time working on it and today was the day we put it into match play."

Going into singles, the Pirates planned to play their best and stay as positive as possible.

Lauren Chisholm, Sydney Wahl, Emma Kesterson, and Lydia Lee all had hard battles and ended up losing in two sets. However, these four players gave each of their opponents a run for their money.

Captain and Senior, Alli Ziehm was down and had an incredible comeback to win the first set in a set tie breaker. Unfortunately, Ziehm lost the second set but went into the match 10-point tiebreaker with determination. Her team lined the court beside her to cheer her on. Ziehm played an incredibly hard fought match but unfortunately did not get the win. "Even though she came up short, Alli, as always, battled hard and defined exactly what it means to be a Southwestern women's tennis player" said Coach Porter. This was, nevertheless, a match to walk away from smiling.

Senior Nina Mitrofanova achieved the Pirates' only win of the day at line one. Mitrofanova's composure on court absolutely played a role in her win. She battled to the very end, as she and her opponent traded off possession of match points; Mitrifanova finally closed the match on her 6th match point. Coach Porter stated, "Nina had a massive win at #1 singles and stayed composed, finally converting on her 6th match point."

The Women's Tennis SCAC Conference Tournament will be held here at Southwestern University on April 28-30, at the Pirates' home courts. Be sure to mark your calendars!
