Women's Tennis Defeats UMHB Crusaders

Southwestern Women's Tennis played a solid match against the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor this past Thursday, February 16, 2023. The UMHB Crusaders put up a tough fight but fell to the Pirates 7-2.

In the first three matches of doubles, it was exciting to see senior Taylor Despriet back out on the court playing line two with Captain Erika Synoski. The two had a fantastic match winning, 8-1. The communication and dedication to win shined through as this team got the first win for the Pirates. Coach Porter was thrilled to have Despriet back on court and stated, "It was great seeing Taylor back in our lineup for the first time all season and thought she looked good out there with Erika." Everyone is excited to see Despriet on court as the season goes on.

Doubles put the Pirates up 2-1, turning everyone's attention to the importance of the singles matches.

Emma Kesterson got an inspiring win at line two for the team. Kesterson's energy on the court really helped out the entire team. Her leadership and team-mindset was extremely apparent as she could be heard cheering everyone else on. Meanwhile, Kesterson kept the energy and atmosphere on her own court high and positive. Coach Porter praised Kesterson by saying, "Emma had tremendous energy throughout her singles match all night and it had a positive effect on all the other singles matches for the better."

Freshman Kimberly Duncan had a great match, taking the first set quickly 6-0. She wasted no time in getting another win for the Pirates, 6-0,6-2. Duncan has been working hard and has been successful.

This was a beneficial and successful match for the women's tennis team. There were several takeaways and areas for improvement, but the ladies were able to find a way to win convincingly, even through the unfavorable conditions.

The Pirates' women's tennis team performance continues to put them in a favorable position for the continuation of the Spring season. The Conference Tournament will be held here at Southwestern University on April 28-30, at the Pirates' home courts!
