Pirates Show Well at ITA Regionals

TYLER, Texas - Despite being in one of the strongest regions the Southwestern women's tennis team performed well at the ITA Tennis Regionals hosted by the University of Texas Tyler on Saturday and Sunday.

Victoria DeLeon received a first-round by and faced Trinity's Kathleen Lundquist in the second round. DeLeon played well but was beat out in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 10-8 to fall into the consolation round. There she faced Trich of UT Tyler and fell 6-2, 6-3 to be bumped from the tournament.

Aimee Blake fell in her opening round against Jessica Blundell, 6-3, 6-3, but recovered in the consolation round to win in three sets over Trinity's Ponder 7-6, 4-6, 10-4. Blake was defeated by McMurry's Patterson in the next round 0-6, 6-1, 10-8.

Jessica Gaines won her first round match against Ashley Albro of UT Tyler 6-3, 4-6, 10-5 but was not able to keep the momentum rolling as the fell to Agnie Nhan of Hardin-Simmons 6-2, 6-2. 

In doubles action, Gaines and DeLeon teamed up in the A bracket and won their first match easily, 8-1 over Gaitan/Collenback of Schriener, but were defeated by Griffith/Segar of Trinity who advanced to the championship match.

In the B bracket, SU's Kristina Krampitz made her name well none by advancing to the finals. She opened her tournament against Lindsay Fox of Schreiner, easily advancing to the second round with a 6-1, 6-0 win. The second round faced Krampitz off against Hellman of Austin College. After a slow start Krampitz regrouped to win 4-6, 6-2, 10-4 to advance to the quarterfinals.

The quarterfinal match up pitted Kramptiz against Chelea Miller of McMurry and after another tough match Krampitz emerged with the win, 4-6, 7-5, 10-8. The semifinal match was a breeze as she took down Collenback of Schreiner 6-3, 6-0 to advance to the finals.

There Krampitz faced Laura Roa of Trinity and fell 6-0, 6-1 to take second in the B bracket.

Virgina Stofer also won her B bracket opening round match, 6-1, 6-3 over Berger of Austin College but fell in the second round match 6-4, 6-4 to Spahn of Schreiner.

Abigail Sedory fell in her opening round match to Collenback of Schreiner 6-1, 6-0 but rebounded nicely with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Cheney of Hardin Simmons in the consolation bracket. Sedory then defeated Kent of East Texas Baptist 6-3, 6-2 in the consolation quarterfinals to advance to the consolation semi-finals. She eventually fell to Evans of UT Tyler in the match 6-4, 6-0.

Hillary Richard moved on to face Johnson of ETBU in the round of 16 and won 6-1, 6-0 to advance to the B quarterfinals against Laura Roa of Trinity. She fell 6-2, 6-1 in the match to fall out of the tournament.

In B bracket doubles action, both teams of Richard/Stofer and Kramptiz/Sedory won their respective opening matches but were bested in the next round to end the tournament for Southwestern.

The Pirates close out the fall season with their annual alumni match on October 15th.
