PIRATE WOMEN TAKE SIXTH AT SCAC TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - The Southwestern women's tennis team finished in sixth place on Sunday at the SCAC Championships. The Pirates went 2-2 over the tournament to end the year at 12-9 overall.

Southwestern opened the tournament by exacting revenge over Millsaps College. The Pirates only won one of the three doubles matches but were hard at work in singles, winning the final four to take the match0up 5-4 and advance.

The win put SU face to face with #3 seed Sewanee who received a bye in the first round. The Pirates couldn't continue their winning ways as Mary Pennington earned the lone victory in the match in #3 singles.

The 7-1 loss dropped Southwestern into the loser's bracket to face Centre College. The Pirates once again took two of three doubles match-ups and then won three singles matches to beat Centre 5-4, advancing to the fifth place match against Colorado College.

SU fell behind 2-1 early after doubles action and then the Tigers took three critical singles matches to get to the five wins they needed to seize fifth place from Southwestern.

Mary Pennington led the way over the weekend, winning three of her four singles matches.

With the 2010 season at a close the Pirates say goodbye to two seniors, Pennington and Emily Gutzmer.
