WOMEN'S TENNIS TAKES DOWN MARY HARDIN-BAYLOR

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Southwestern women's tennis team looked impressive their home match as they played host to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Thursday afternoon. The Crusaders had revenge on their mind but the Pirates took care of business, winning 6-3.

Southwestern started off strong, winning two of the three doubles matches. Victoria DeLeon and Mary Pennington teamed up in the #2 flight to defeat Everett/Knight 8-6 and Lali Satyavada and Jessica Gaines took down Ramos/Long 8-6 in the #3 slot. Emily Gutzmer and Sara Fitsimmons were unable to make it three in a row as they fell in the first flight to Aarhus/Aarhus 8-3.

As singles matches got underway Southwestern started out slowly, dropping two of the top three matches, but regrouped to take the final three and secure the win. DeLeon fell 6-1, 6-2 to Megan Aarhus in the first flight and Gaines lost to Everett 6-3, 7-5 in the third flight.

Pennington's consistent, tireless play earned her the win in the second flight as she took down Mallory Aarhus 6-4, 7-6 and Satyavada easily handled Long 6-4, 6-2 in the fourth flight, putting Southwestern on top 4-3.

Gutzmer outlasted Knight in the fifth flight as both sets went down to the wire, 7-6, 7-5. Her win secured the victory for the Pirates and Fitzsimmons sealed the deal by winning over Ramos 6-1, 7-5.

Southwestern remains at home as they open up SCAC action against Trinity and Austin College on Saturday and Hendrix on Sunday.
