SINGLES MATCHES TRIP UP WOMEN'S TENNIS

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Despite a strong start to the day winning two of three doubles matches the Pirate women's tennis team fell to Methodist University 5-4 in their first home meet of the Spring season.

Methodist snuck the first win of the day in doubles with Flaherty/Meindl defeating Emily Gutzmer and Sara Fitzsimmons 8-5, but the Pirates rebounded to take the second and third doubles match-ups. Fitzsimmons partnered with Victoria DeLeon in the #2 slot to take down Purser/Powell 8-3 while Abigail Sedory and Sarah Johnson handled Brayton/Hamel in the #3 doubles 8-3 putting SU up 2-1 heading into singles action.

Methodist came storming back as they were able to pull ahead one, 3-2, with #1 and #2 singles wins. DeLeon fell 6-3, 7-5 to Flaherty and Mary Pennington dropped her match-up with Meindl 6-4, 6-4.

The Pirates dug back in to take the middel two matches as Satyavada took care of Purser 6-4, 6-7, 10-5 and Gutzmer easily dismissed Brayton 6-1, 6-0. With these two wins Southwestern reclaimed the lead 4-3.

Heading down the stretch SU needed just one more win to take the victory, but were unable to secure it in the final two singles matches as Fitzsimmons fell to Powell 6-3, 6-3 and Johnson dropped her contest against Shelton 6-4, 6-4.

The Pirates are now 4-3 on the year and have some time off before returning back to action March 25th at home against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor at 3:00 pm.
