PIRATES SPLIT WEEKEND ACTION IN EAST TEXAS

LONGVIEW, Texas - The Southwestern women's tennis team split weekend action on a road trip to East Texas, falling to #30 UT-Tyler 9-0 but defeating LeTourneau 6-0.

At the outset of the match against Tyler the Pirates were competing well and put up a strong fight. Victoria DeLeon and Jessica Gaines were narrowly defeated by Albro/Hagler 8-6 in #1 doubles. Sara Fitzsimmons and Emily Gutzer fell to McRae/Hermsdorf 8-0 in #2 doubles and Lali Satyavada and Mary Pennington dropped their #3 doubles match-up 8-2 to Harmon/Nielsen.

As singles matches got underway Southwestern was once again in the hunt but were unable to pull out a victory. DeLeon fell to #14 Hagler 7-5, 6-1 and Gaines dropped her match 6-4, 6-3 to Nielsen. Pennington lost 6-4, 6-2 to Hermsdorf while Satyavada fell 6-3, 6-0 to Albro. Gutzmer dropped her match 6-2, 6-4 to #19 Giovannini and Fitzsimmons fell 6-1, 6-0 to Trich in the final singles match.

The Priates rebounded well as they headed to LeTourneau the following day, dominating the action from the outset. SU dropped just four games out of the 28 in doubles action. DeLeon/Gaines defeated Bright/kincade 8-1, Gutzmer/Fitzsimmons bested Hairell/Nelson 8-2 and Pennington/Satyavada took down Wilson/Athans 8-1.

DeLeon had the toughest match of the day in her flight one singles match. After easily winning the first set 6-1 she found a tough match in the second set as Hairell took the set 6-7 (6-8). DeLeon found her stride again in the third set as she defeated Hairell 10-5 in set three to take the win.

Gaines followed by blanking her opponent Bright, dominating every aspect of the match, winning 6-0, 6-0 in flight two. Pennington sealed the win for SU with a 6-1, 6-2 win in flight three and the final three matches went unfinished.

Southwestern remains on the road for a pair of matches at the end of the week. They head to Belton, TX on Thursday where they face Mary Hardin-Baylor and then head out to Abilene, TX for a match-up with McMurry on Friday.
