WOMEN'S TENNIS HAS IMPRESSIVE SHOWING AT SPRING OPENING INVITE

BELTON, Texas - The Southwestern women's tennis team captured three of the top five spots in doubles action and the top two spots in Flight 2 singles at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

In doubles action the duo of Victoria DeLeon and Jessica Gaines advanced to the championship match after beating UMHB's Long/Ramos 8-5 and Everett/Knight 8-2. In the championship match DeLeon/Gaines were narrowly defeated 8-5 for the top prize.

Emily Gutzmer and Sara Fitzsimmons won their opening match against Lonewolf/Perez 8-6 but fell to eventual champion Aarhus/Aarhus 8-4 to go to the consolation match against Everett/Knight. Gutzmer/Fitzsimmons dominated the match 8-1 to take third place.

Mary Pennington and Lali Satyavada had to face the Aarhus duo in the opening round and fell 8-1 but cruised through the rest of the field for the fifth place finish.

The Pirates had a tough first round in flight one singles as two of the three fell in their opening match. Gaines was the lone Pirate to win her first round contest as she defeated Reyes of OLL 6-0, 6-3 but then fell to Aarhus in the second round and Everett in the consolation match to finish fourth.

DeLeon and Pennington each won their second round match to face each other in the fifth place contest where DeLeon edged out Pennington 6-3, 6-4 for fifth.

Gutzmer and Satyavada both won their first and second round matches and faced one another in the flight two championship contest. After a hotly contested opening set where Satyavada edged out Gutzmer 7-6(2), Satyavada kept the momentum to take the top spot going 6-2 in the second set.

Fitzsimmons finished seventh, defeating Ramos 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.

In flight 3 singles SU's Sara Johnson won the flight by defeating UMHB's Peltier 6-4, 6-3 in the opening round, Perez 6-2, 6-3 in the second round and Loftus 6-0, 6-2 in the championship match.

Fehima Dawy won her opening round contest 6-1, 6-1 but fell in her final two matches to finish in fourth. Kendall Hogenson and Abigail Sedory each dropped the opening round but advanced to the fifth place match where Hogenson outlasted Sedory 7-6(3), 6-2.

The Pirates have their first dual meet of the season at Texas Luthern on Friday. Matches are scheduled to begin at 4:00 pm.
